Anselm Kiefer - Kiefer Pavilion

Die 7 HimmelsPaläste, 2005

Allusions to cabalistic texts are also present in this work based on the “seven celestial palaces” originating from Merkabah mysticism and related to the seven levels of spiritual ascension. Kiefer has focussed on this spiritual concept in many of his pieces.

This work clearly shows two different levels, the microcosm and the macrocosm, that strengthen the allusion of ascension. The microcosm, in the lower part of the canvas, is represented by a defining element of a human being: the home. The macrocosm, in the top part, is represented by constellations. Some of the comets even bear their name or number. Kiefer considers stars to be a symbol of both existence and memory, as they are seen through a light that really is no longer there.
