As part of the exhibition “Bill Viola: Mirrors of the Invisible”, organised by the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation between 4th October 2019 and 5th January 2020, PLANTA’s permanent installation “Ocean Without a Shore” joins the “Bill Viola Route”: a series of parallel events and activities displaying works by the artist in other cultural institutions such as Bòlit Contemporary Art Centre (Girona), the Museum of Montserrat, Vic Episcopal Museum, Palau de la Música, Liceu Opera (Barcelona) and PLANTA.
This initiative, running simultaneously to the exhibition at La Pedrera-Casa Milà, has been created to increase the exhibition’s presence across the whole Catalan region, creating a network of collaborating centres displaying some of Viola’s most significant works.
The exhibition “Bill Viola: Mirrors of the Invisible” offers a comprehensive journey through the artist’s career, which has evolved in parallel to video technology development over the past 40 years, and brings together significant work from his early years (1977-1979), through to recent creations such as “Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water)”: a project commissioned by St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, where it has been a permanent exhibition since 2014.
